External chat is a Celo feature that lets users message a non-Celo user. The non-Celo user will be notified through SMS with a link to open the external chat through a browser.
Creating an external chat
- On your inbox, tap the floating action button ( ) at the bottom-right of your screen. The New Chat screen will open.
- Select the 'New External Chat'.
- Enter the required details of the non-Celo user.
- Tap 'Create new external chat' to start messaging.
- On your inbox, tap the New Chat icon ( ) at the top-right of your screen. The New Chat screen will open.
- Select the 'New External Chat'.
- Enter the required details of the non-Celo user.
- Tap 'Create new external chat' to start messaging.
- On your Celo web, click on 'External' from the navigation.
- Once opened, click on the 'New External Chat'.
- Enter the required details of the non-Celo user.
- Click 'Create new external chat' to start messaging.
Additional info
The non-Celo user will get notified via SMS with a link to open the external chat.
Admin rights on External Chat
The creator of the external chat becomes the admin right away.
Admins on external chat will be able to do the following:
- Add and remove another Celo user to the chat.
- Edit the external user's details.
- Add and remove another admin.
Editing external chat details
- Open the external chat you want to edit.
- Tap on the header of the chat. The external chat details will open.
- Tap on 'Edit Details'.
- You may start making changes and then save.
- Open the external chat you want to edit.
- Tap on the header of the chat. The external chat details will open.
- Tap on 'Edit Details'.
- You may start making changes and then save.
- Open the external chat you want to edit.
- Click on the header of the chat. The external chat details will open.
- Click on 'Edit Details'.
- You may start making changes and then save.
Adding and removing Celo users to the external chat
Adding a user
- Open the external chat.
- Tap the header to open the details screen.
- Scroll down to the participants' list and tap on 'Add Participants' button.
- Select the user/s you want to add, then tap the 'Continue' button.
- You will be navigated back to the details screen with the user added to the participants' list.
Removing a user
- Open the external chat.
- Tap the header to open the details screen.
- Scroll down to the participants' list and tap on the user you want to remove. A dialogue box will appear.
- Select 'Remove from External Chat'. The user will be removed immediately and will lose access to the chat.

- Scroll down to the participants' list and tap on the user you want to assign as an admin. A dialogue box will appear.
- Select 'Make admin' and the user will become an admin immediately.
- To remove an admin, simply tap the user with the admin label and select 'Remove as admin'.
- Open the external chat.
- Tap the header to open the details screen.
- Scroll down to the participants' list and tap on the user you want to assign as an admin. A dialogue box will appear.

- From the participants' list, click on the user you want to assign as an admin. A dialogue box will appear.

Leaving the external chat
- Open the external chat.
- Tap the header to open the details screen.
- Scroll down the screen and select 'Leave External Chat'. You will immediately lose access to the chat.
- Open the external chat.
- Tap the header to open the details screen.
- Scroll down the screen and select 'Leave External Chat'. You will immediately lose access to the chat.
- Open the external chat.
- Click the header to open the details screen.
- Look for the 'Leave External Chat' button, then click. You will immediately lose access to the chat.
